I was fortunate enough to banish the January blues earlier this year with a ski trip to the Austrian Alps. I returned full to the brim with cheese and chocolate – here are some of my favourite spot

  • For enormous plates of lasagne and schnitzel, a genius slide down to the loos (thank you ski boot gods) and a wine cellar of dreams, Arlberg Hospiz Alm – a short ski from St Anton in St Christoph – is a must visit.
  • At the top of Gampenbahn, Restaurant Himmeleck (Gampen café) makes for the perfect mid-morning pitstop. Coffee, hot chocolate and fire pits on a snowy morning, Aperol and sunglasses on the terrace when the sun is shining – heaven.
  • Worth the (frankly terrifying) ski down in the dark, Krazy Kanguruh and Mooserwirt are the two notorious apres-ski bars of St Anton. Either side of the mountain on your run home for the day, perfectly positioned for a hard-earned drink (or two).
  • Tyrolean magic in this Austrian restaurant right on the piste in Lech, expect rustic wooden interiors, traditional décor, views for days and hearty bowls of pasta from Kriegeralpe.
  • For those averse to gluten, Anthony’s in St Anton town centre is your answer. The coeliac in our group was delighted with her gluten-free pizza as were the rest of us, fuelled by cheesy, wood-fired goodness.
  • Enjoy the last of the mountain sun with a stop and a spritz at the Burg Hotel Oberlech and watch the world whizz past you.
  • On a cold bright morning (when it might just be too chilly to sit outside) there’s no better bet than Rendl Restaurant where floor-to-ceiling windows allow you to bask in the sunshine whilst sheltering from brisk winds, whilst the big tables mean you can plan the rest of the day’s route with military precision.
