Between the Lionesses (and their victory!), Wimbledon, the Lions, the Open and the Test Cricket, we’ve been spoilt for choice when it comes to sporting excellence in July.

And of course, with all good sporting events come hospitality occasions, and judging by this month’s flood of recommendations that came in from the team, we’ve been very busy frequenting our favourite local hot spots.

In July, we’ve enjoyed…

Eating

  • At Michelin-starred neighbourhood bistro Starling in Esher where the Truffle & Parmesan Crumpets and Xoco Chocolate Ice Cream, Early Harvest Olive Oil & Piedmont Hazelnuts are not to be missed
  • Croissants filled with Oat Milk Soft Serve at independent bakery Gwyn’s in Horsham
  • The New Orleans menu at jellybean favourite Six by Nico

Drinking

  • Impossibrew IPA – one of a new breed of 0% beers with special ‘Social Blend’ to recreate the sense of relaxation you get with alcohol (but without the alcohol!)
  • English red wine at Missing Gate Vineyard, Essex, during a recent weekend getaway
  • Pimms on the Hill at Wimbledon because somehow, it tastes even better on a sunny day watching world-class tennis

Cooking

  • A summer favourite of spaghetti with cherry tomatoes, courgettes, white wine, prawns and garlic – olive oil, a splash of pasta water, garlic and the cherry tomatoes come together for a beautiful sauce
  • TikTok favourite from the last month, Tomato and Burrata Dip (we even tried it out in the office)
  • Lemon and Ricotta Ravioli at Pasta Evangelists Workshop

Reading

  • Our own Nick Clancy’s response to that viral Coldplay concert moment and the top tips you need when it comes to crisis PR
  • The blueprint for all good foodie memoirs, Toast by Nigel Slater
  • A 360® look at lunch in The New Yorker’s The Case for Lunch

Watching and Listening To

  • Nu Genea – Bar Mediterraneo, a great chill out summer album if you want to recreate summer holiday vibes in your own garden
  • Gastropod, the podcast where food, science and history intersect
  • The Tiny Chef Show – one which we may be slightly late to, but our newfound obsession makes it worth the recommendation nonetheless

Following

  • @al_dante_channel – incredible artistry and food cinematography – bonus points for often featuring a very cute pup
  • Progress of this year’s National Chef of the Year via @craftguildofchefs
  • Industry charity supporting those looking for work in hospitality @only_a_pavement_away
