Here at jellybean, we’re committed to supporting local projects and being an active member in the Leatherhead community. That’s why, this year, we are proud to have offered our support to a local charity, Leatherhead Youth Project (LYP), to sponsor its suitably foodie 5-A-Day Campaign.

Background

LYP offers innovative youth services in Leatherhead, Bookham and across Mole Valley, responding to local needs and helping young people to be safe, happy and make positive changes in their lives.

The charity takes a relational and positive approach to young people, providing support and skills from ages 11 – 24 to help them overcome any barriers they are facing and build a brighter future.

LYP helps uncover the needs of the young people who attend, helping them form connections to their peers and the youth workers, through taking part in a variety of different projects to help achieve their goals.

The support for young people includes youth cafés in Leatherhead and Bookham, the opportunity to access counselling and emotional wellbeing sessions, targeted evening projects, tailored tuition to gain maths and English qualifications, a social action project to help give back to their community and the chance to go on exciting trips including ‘Into the Wild’, an accessible alternative to the Duke of Edinburgh award.

5-A-Day

LYP’s 5-A-Day initiative takes place during term-time every Friday afternoon for young people in school Years 7 – 13. The foodie sessions are designed to help young people grow in confidence in the kitchen, develop their knowledge of fruits and vegetables, as well as gain an understanding of the importance of nutrition.

The project is very young person led and each week those who attend cook a recipe of their choosing with a new fruit or vegetable. Recipes have included a mixed berry trifle and vegetable tortilla pizza.

As a keen cook and baker, Laura Dicken who heads up the project also encourages participants to find healthier ways to adapt popular recipes to help hit that 5-A-Day goal.

Those who’ve attended have discovered a love of blackberries, tropical fruits, including kiwi, avocado and have even gone so as far to make their own ice creams – with banana and strawberry being incredibly popular!

 Where does jellybean come in?

As well as our financial support for this incredible foodie cause, we are supporting the programme with a social campaign to help highlight – who LYP are, the amazing work they do and the 5-A-Day initiative itself.

We also hope to:

  1. Challenge the perception that Surrey is a wealthy area; instead highlighting the wealth divide in the county, notably in North and South Leatherhead.
  2. Raise awareness of the charity with other local businesses who may be looking to develop their own CSR policies and offer support.
