The Plough Inn, A Review
If there’s one thing I’m especially good at, it’s spending money. And well, I can’t think of anything I’d rather spend it on, on a Friday night, than dinner out, and a few drinks.
Now, I’ll be honest, I do have a soft spot for The Plough Inn in Cobham. Not just because they ask for my ID every time I go, but because I used to work there. Many years have gone by since the days of Eat Out to Help Out (in a 40-degree summer no less) and of course menus have changed and staff have moved on, though it’s still got its charm, and a beautiful garden terrace. I do credit The Plough Inn (owned by Rarebreed Dining) for properly introducing me to the world of steak. Prior to my twenties, I was the horrid sort of child who used to order a steak… well done.
Anyway, when I joined and saw the on-site butchery, I learnt all about Tomahawks, Smoked cuts, lean cuts and my personal favourite a Chateaubriand – what did I say about my love of spending money? Over my time there, tasting menus (or visiting on my nights off), I became a medium-rare convert, and now, when I fancy a good steak, I look to The Plough Inn with confidence that it’ll deliver.
The Menu
Like all great dinners, I start with a bowl of olives. A classic, can’t go wrong, bonus points as they come in a delicious oil, perfect for bread!
Starters
Blood Orange Tiger Prawns in a Jalapeño Mayo on Focaccia – absolutely delicious. Side note, in my opinion focaccia just scores slightly higher than sourdough, purely down to the fact I don’t need a saw to cut it once toasted.
Beetroot-Cured Smoked Salmon Lemon Crème Fraiche, Crisp Bread, Chilli Jam. I surprised myself by liking this, for I’m not a huge fan of smoked salmon or beetroot.
Special mention to the burrata too, which I normally would have, except I had one the night before, and it seemed too decadent to go two in two.
Mains
Steak – obviously. I accompanied mine with Crispy New Potatoes in a Sour Cream & Chive Dip. I normally go for chunky chips, but I will pick this forever more. The potatoes were left skin-on, and I have no words other than delicious.
In terms of sides, I went for the top-tier of vegetables, Tenderstem Broccoli in a Sesame Miso Dressing, Garlic & Chilli Oil. SO good, as well as a Hispi Cabbage in Marmite Butter. As we know, Marmite can be a bit love it or hate it, but honestly it smelt stronger than it tasted, and it was just the right amount of salty.
Dessert
Everyone needs a little sweet treat! For dessert, we opted for Chocolate & Hazelnut Mini Doughnuts, accompanied with a jellybean favourite, Nutella®!
Overall, a delicious dinner and a night out well spent.
If you’re in Surrey, or fancy making a visit to the county, I recommend The Plough Inn for a quality steak menu, and a fantastic Sunday Roast too!
