A couple of weeks ago three teams of beans participated in the retail challenge to fundraise for the charity DEBRA. DEBRA’s retail challenge raises awareness of the condition and valuable monies to #StopThePain. As well as donations, the awareness generated helps spread the message about EB and encourage others to get involved.
Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is the name for a group of painful genetic skin conditions that cause the skin to become very fragile and tear or blister at the slightest touch. DEBRA UK exists to provide care and support to improve quality of life for people living with EB, and to fund pioneering research to find effective treatments and, ultimately cure(s) for EB.
The bean team dedicated a day to volunteer at one of DEBRA’s charity shops. To add an exciting twist, each team engaged in a friendly competition to determine which group can generate the most funds on that day and win ultimate bragging rights.
DEBRA’s retail challenge provided an excellent chance for team bonding, a break from the typical office setting, and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the lives of individuals afflicted by EB, a severely painful genetic skin condition also referred to as ‘butterfly skin’.
Each team came up with different ideas to boost the stores sales and fundraise for DEBRA, with ideas ranging from wearing fancy dress, playing musical instruments to entice people into the store, baking cakes, pastries and sweet treats for the customers and guessing how many jellybeans are in the jar!
The results showed that the team with the highest takings were Team Thursday (Melis, Liv, Lauren & Emma), so clearly all our yummy bakes from our bakes sale won over the staff and customers!
