Both consumers and brands have the power to create real change, and by examining our own buying choices, we can help to make our world a fairer and more ethical place. This Fairtrade Fortnight (27th February – 12th March) is about spreading a simple message – making the small switch to Fairtrade supports producers in protecting the future of some of our most-loved food and the planet.
At jellybean, we care about making a positive impact on the planet, creating a real change for those who need it most. Unfortunately, unfair trade is not the only issue. Combined with climate change, crops are becoming harder to grow, which could in turn affect the foods we find on our shelves and in our restaurants (just look at the current shortages of vegetables caused by poor harvests). By making the small switch to Fairtrade, we can all support producers in protecting the future of some of our most-loved food and the planet.
Fairtrade has helped farmers such as Saddick Abanga to better utilise their farms, fighting climate change and protecting the future of the foods we love.
Saddick Abanga, 39, Fairtrade cocoa farmer, Ghana
‘I didn’t know I was punishing the land, now because of this project I’ve seen the benefits, there are more nutrients in the soil.’
“Saddick farms nine acres of land for cocoa. He’s been doing this for 18 years and it’s getting increasingly difficult due to the climate crisis. Part of his farm lies high on a rocky, steep hillside, unfriendly terrain for cocoa plants. Saddick’s working on gradually surrounding it with shade trees. This is a technique he discovered after joining an agro-forestry project, which offers farmers training in methods to adapt to climate change by improving soil, planting for shade and attracting biodiversity.
Saddick was able to join because he is part of a Fairtrade co-operative, where in addition to projects like this, farmers can choose to invest their Premium in adapting to the climate and cost of farming crises.” Source: Fairtrade UK1
Our aim at jellybean is to help the planet and the people within it. We can do this by not only taking care in which products we use, but also the brands we work for. We are proud to work with a range of confectionary brands that are fairtrade including Ferrero and Ritter Sport. Let’s come together to show our support for businesses that are doing their part for sustainability and supporting workers in developing countries.
Knowing about Fairtrade helps us make sure we’re making a difference – let’s work together towards creating more meaningful change! Let us know how you are part of the change on our socials – @jellybeanagency on Twitter and Instagram.
