You only have to see my Jellybean team photo to know that I love peanut butter! As my favourite food it seemed only fitting to look into the history of this scrumptious nutty spread and what makes it so delicious.
The rich history of peanut butter dates all the way back to the 13th century when Aztecs would crush peanuts into a paste, however the peanut butter we recognise today was not created until 1884 by Marcellus Gilmore Edson in Canada. It was then refined further by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg in 1895 (also creator of a few famous cereals) who found a process for making peanut butter from raw peanuts and taken a step further in 1903 when Dr. Ambrose Straub patented the first peanut butter machine.
Today peanut butter is one of the most iconic American foods going and over the years has been combined with every flavour combination thinkable. It’s not only the US who are crazy for peanut butter, it’s also a household favourite in the UK with a market worth £94 million a year!*
Searching into the history of peanut butter I’m pleased to see I’m not the only one that thinks peanut butter can go with absolutely anything (and I really do mean anything!). Here are some of the best combinations I’ve come across:
Whether you prefer crunchy or smooth peanut butter there is no denying how great peanut butter is and let’s face it, toast would just not be the same without it! Great news therefore, that we have our very own peanut butter client here at Jellybean – Manilife. If you haven’t tried their Deep Roast Peanut Butter you’re missing out!
