An inspiring morning…

For my charity morning, I decided to work at the Princess Alice Hospice charity shop. This charity is dedicated to making end of life care the best it can possibly be and supporting families through this difficult time.

It’s impossible to imagine how tough it must be to be in a situation where you or someone you love needs to go into a hospice, but to know that you’re in a place where you and your family will be looked after has got to be a massive help. Princess Alice have a team of specialist nurses, doctors, therapists, social workers and bereavement volunteers that work at their Hospice in Esher and with families at home, to provide all round care and support.

On my charity morning, I helped out in their shop in Leatherhead by doing various tasks, such as unpacking donations and choosing what was in good enough condition to sell on (you’d be surprised how many random and tatty bits they get!). I was also hanging up and tagging clothes to go out in the shop, putting the books that had been donated on the shelves – and I even managed to sort out their internet when it went down (well…I just turned the router off and then back on, but I was their hero!).

The managers and volunteers in the shop work so hard – it’s inspiring to see how selfless people are, giving up their own time to help such a great cause.

Here are a few facts to show how much donations really help:

74% of their funds are from donations

2,900 is the number of people they cared for in 2017/18

84% of their income is spent on care

So next time you have a spring clean, make sure you take any items that are in good condition to your local charity shop.
