Being a graphic designer, I have a very particular set of skills. Not quite Liam Neeson particular, but almost (not really) and these skills might, possibly, be fairly difficult for a charity to source for free. So, for my Jellybean’s 12 Days of Giving contribution this Christmas, I gave four hours of focused design time to The Springboard Charity.

A little background on this brilliant charity: The Springboard Charity help unemployed and disadvantaged people of all ages in to work in the hospitality, leisure and tourism industry via training and support. It educates, mentors, advises and otherwise prepares (including raising confidence and skill-level) beneficiaries in order to advance young people, get people of all ages in to work (relieving unemployment) and lessen poverty.

I very much believe in compassion and community as fundamental principles in life and The Springboard Charity’s cause is one I was very happy to contribute to for my half a day.

As an unexpected (but rather festive) bonus, the design work Terry and Chris at The Springboard Charity commissioned me to do was a set of Pantomime graphics. Dick Whittington is a panto I’ve seen before – I went along to The Harlequin in Redhill with Brownies to watch Dick (Mark Speight of children’s tv series SMart) and his cat on their adventures about twenty years ago – and it was fun working on something both familiar and Christmassy. Pantomimes and the celebs that act in them are (I think) brilliant, encouraging laughter and silliness for a good cause at Christmas time. Supporting our charities supports those in need of charity and that’s worth everything – however bad the jokes (and costumes) may be!

Terry and Chris were lovely to work with and though it was only half a day of Jellybean time, we produced graphics that will promote the charity’s pantomime this Christmas and support The Springboard Charity in the crucial work they are doing to change lives.

It just goes to show that time really is the greatest gift you can give, and even just a little means a lot.

Magic.
