As part of our foodservice agency; Jellybean’s 12 days of Giving campaign I elected to help out at our local Princess Alice Hospice shop. This is a charity that was a great support to my family when my uncle was suffering from Prostate cancer and his stay there certainly helped during a very difficult time for him and my aunt. Their mission is to reach out to more people by delivering outstanding care, nurturing compassionate communities, sharing their knowledge and expertise and influencing the debate around death and dying. They aim to offer local communities the best care and support before, during and after death.

I spent my afternoon unpacking, sizing and steam cleaning donated clothes – I could do with one of those steamers at home! I also sorted some Christmas decorations that had been donated (including a 3 foot Santa), along with other miscellaneous bits and pieces. Any clothes they can’t sell get sold for rags so they make sure that everything that that they receive generates income. Anita, the shop manager, was very friendly and welcoming. She told me that for every £1.00 they receive, 84p goes directly to the charity and this can only be achieved because of the volunteers they have giving up their precious time to work in the shop so she was only to pleased to have an extra pair of hands!
