Food and Drink PR Agencies - Mintel Looks to Eating OutEating out…for me it’s a social thing. It’s a plate of food, with a drink and great company.

It’s a social thing but a rarity…or so it was once. Recent Mintel research shows that 31% of British diners ate in a restaurant at least once a week over the three month period from February to April 2014 with one in five Londoners eating out more than once a week!

With the help of discount codes and vouchers the frequency of eating out is only increasing – Mintel’s study found more than a third (32%) of diners used money-off coupons at restaurants within the three months whilst almost 40% of those earning over £50,000 took advantage of the discounted bills too.

The eating out market is predicted to reach £33.5 billion during 2014 – a 3% rise YOY.

And it’s not just the frequency Mintel picked up on. Healthy eating is less than a priority for most, it appears. Despite more than half (55%) of the British population claiming to have made conscious efforts to ditch the pounds over the past year, only 8% of diners admitted to opting for a healthy option when dining out.

Can you blame them, I have to ask? Forgive me for the repetition but eating out…for me it’s a social thing. I’m with the 43% of people that admitted to choosing the indulgent items off the menu. We can eat bland vegetables and lean cuts of meat at home. If I spend my hard earned money, I’m going to spend it on a treat – the tastier, the more filling, the more regrettable (for the right reasons) the better, I say. And if I can use a discount code or QR voucher code to pay even less for more (calories) then all the better!
