Madeira on a Plate

Food PR Agencies - Madeira on a PlateSilly season is upon us as everyone heads off on holiday and here at Jellybean (the leading foodservice agency) we’re no different. So last week I had the usual fight to fit my life into the 20Kg luggage allowance and headed off to a little dot on the map in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean – Madeira (with my two favourite boys).

The Jellybeans are famed for being devoted foodies and I have to say I’m no exception. One of the best bits of any holiday for me is trying new dishes and eating out as much as possible. After pre-bikini dieting in preparation for posing around the infinity pool, all bets were off for the duration of the holiday and I got stuck into all Madeira had to offer. As a Portuguese island, their cuisine has been influenced by Brazilian, Portuguese and Mediterranean dishes and, as I found out, has a lot to offer. We were lucky enough to sample lots of great food out there, but my top three would have to be:

1)      Traditional Madeiran Espetada at Vila Da Carne – To the uninitiated this is delicious chunks of steak (or chicken, fish etc.) on a skewer and cooked over wood chips – amazing! Possibly the best steak I have ever had.
2)      Steak on a Stone – It’s been around for some time in the UK, but somehow it tasted that much better enjoyed under the blue sky and cooling breeze of Funchal, Madeira’s capital.
3)      Scabbard Fish with Fried Banana at Gavio Novo – As you would expect, Madeira has some fabulous seafood, but you may not know that one of its main exports (after Madeira wine) is bananas. In their wisdom the locals have put the two together and created this traditional dish. It’s a little like having your main and pudding together but I was glad I gave it a go!

As well as sampling the culinary delights of the island, we also managed to fit in some sight-seeing, cocktails at Reid’s, a trip on a cable car and catamaran, about four books and of course a fair amount of Madeira wine (from Blandy’s). It was a great way to spend a week and if you get the chance I’d encourage you to go to this lovely little island!
