Consumers who eat and drink when shopping spend 48% more on retail goods.*
This is an interesting stat. Firstly, because of the link that is evident between retail spend and catering and secondly, because I think they may have been spying on my shopping habits!
New analysis by CACI, a data intelligence company that offers advice to some of the country’s biggest retailers such as Bluewater, has revealed that there is a strong link between retail spend and catering, and I for one, am a prime example of this.
I am a self-confessed shopaholic. And I love my food. So the two combined is a must when I’m out and about for a spot of retail therapy! Whether it be grabbing a quick sarnie (or slice of cake), or taking time out to sit down and enjoy a full on lunch (with wine), as part of a proper girlie day out, food is the perfect fuel for battling the crowds and helping to find that perfect purchase!
Retailers have been quick to latch onto the changing behaviours of shoppers, with centres such as Westfield which are more than just simply a shopping centre; they are a shopping experience – where hours can be lost wandering between the vast array of shops, sampling culinary delights from the heady mix of food outlets on offer, even putting your feet up and relaxing with a film at the cinema! Who couldn’t love shopping when you can combine all of the above?
Alex McCulloch, principal consultant at CACI, says:
“The centre that gets a shopper to pause and engage with catering is the centre that sees a significant increase in spend across all retail and ultimately a happy shopper.”
So… it seems like a pretty simple formula – if we’re fed we’re happy, and when we’re happy, we spend more! I for one (and my bank balance) am certainly testament to this. Shopping and food – they ARE the perfect combination!
