Most of us have heard of the juicing fad – popular amongst celebrities, who are more than happy to sacrifice solid meals for green mush in the hope to lose some extra inches! I for one have never really been sold on the fad for ‘green mush’, preferring not to swap my sandwich for a juice. However, the latest vegetable drink trend is much more up my street…
Bright green and packed full of vitamins, vegetable-laced cocktails are reinventing our ‘5-A-Day’. ‘Juicetails’ as they are known, are becoming a popular edition to trendy bar menus and are even being backed by top chefs such as Jason Atherton, as well as head bartenders in several top London hotels.
Popular combinations include mushrooms and avocados mixed with tequila, pea cordial mixed with Prosecco and root vegetables mixed with champagne. These mixtures would definitely stand out on a cocktail menu, but according to bartenders, there’s more to these drinks than just their unusual combinations – they should be appreciated for the culinary element the vegetables add to mixology.
Granted, it’s a little out there, but this new trend certainly sounds like a more appealing (and fun) way of getting my ‘5-A-Day’! If I ever find myself in a bar studying the cocktail menu and these new veg inspired versions are on offer, I will definitely be giving a ‘juicetail’ a try!
