Oscar Wilde once said: “It’s an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco. It must be a delightful city and possess all the attractions of the next world.” He was right!
A recent journey of mine took me to the sunny state of California, home of the San Francisco Giants, Golden Gate Bridge and not forgetting Boudin’s sourdough!
What better way to begin my trip than with a baseball game of two rivals; the San Francisco Giants v San Diego Padres. My first live baseball game and I was hooked straight away! A little like rounders I caught onto the game really quickly, and with a beer in hand it was hard not to enjoy!
As is the American way, there was no shortage of food outlets in the stadium. With an array of burgers, hotdogs, garlic fries, churros, snow cones and corn dogs, it was physically impossible to leave the stadium hungry!
Not without its culture, San Francisco is full of history. From the famous Golden Gate Bridge built in 1937 offering a three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean to the historic place that is Alcatraz Island – once a prison that was home to the likes of Al Capone and Roy Gardner, it now stands empty and abandoned, but is still an imposing and eerie sight to behold.
For anyone planning a trip to San Fran, I would recommend heading down to Fishermans Wharf and grabbing a beer and sandwich from Boudin’s, then hopping on the ferry to the Golden Gate Bridge (which actually takes you round Alcatraz). With a heady combination of sunshine and great food, you can spend all day relaxing and watching the world pass you by – I did!
A city I will definitely return to, I would advise anyone looking for a holiday that will be full of history, sunshine, culture and delicious food there is no better place to visit. As Oscar Wilde once said, “It’s an odd thing, but anyone who disappears is said to be seen in San Francisco.”
