Food PR - The Revival of the Fried Chicken in the UKKnown for my love of chicken, you can imagine how excited I was to find out that the UK is set for a fried chicken renaissance! We’re all very aware of the hoo-haa around fancy burgers and fashionable hot dogs, and as a reaction to this a number of big chain restaurants, along with many independents, are adding a southern style twist to their menus, creating new, tastier breaded recipes using ‘honest chicken’ (aka free-range, locally sourced & hand-battered).

Below are some delicious examples of how various restaurants are spicing up their chicken offerings (be warned… they will make your mouth water!):

Chains:

  • Harvester Fried Chicken, Harvester Salad & Grill: chicken breast in a Cajun-spiced coating, served with seasoned fries, barbecue dip and buttered peas
  • Southern-Fried-Style Chicken, Scream: crunchy Southern-fried-style chicken fillets served with barbecue seasoned chips
  • Southern Fried Chicken, Coal Grill & Bar: succulent chicken breast coated in a spicy breadcrumb batter, deep-fried and served with creamed sweetcorn, chips or mash
  • Streetwise All Stars, KFC: choice of BBQ or Flamin’ Streetwise wrap with popcorn chicken and a portion of fries

Independents:

  • Blazing Saddle, Chooks: sandwich of buttermilk fried chicken topped with chipotle sauce and served with coleslaw
  • Chicken Roll, Jubo: Korean fried chicken fillet, kimchi slaw and gojuchang mayo
  • Love Me Tenders, Clutch: fried chicken tenders in a peanut and chilli crust

The key to success seems to be not only sourcing good quality poultry, but like the independents are showing, adding a point of difference to your chicken with a little twist such as drawing influences from different cuisines and serving alongside well thought out side dishes.

I for one am very excited about this trend and will be going out of my way to try as many varieties as possible, balanced out with the same amount of bums, tums and thighs classes of course!
