The ‘Foodie’ trends set to hit in 2014

At Jellybean we pride ourselves on being true ‘foodies’- staying up-to-date on the latest trends, product updates and innovations within the food industry (as well as eating lots of delicious food at every opportunity)!

With 2013 coming to a close, we’ve been checking out what exciting new ventures are predicted to take to the stage with our American neighbours in 2014 and which will no doubt soon be knocking at our shores.

Here are some of the trends that we think are worth watching out for…

Chefs ‘special dietary’ menu options are predicted to be rejuvenated as the niche market of healthy eating moves into mainstream. Nutritionists have finally influenced restaurant menus across the world, with increasing restaurant chains catering for the gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan diets (it’s about time)!

Anchovies take a stand on the trendy food market. Whether you’re a lover or a hater, this little love/hate fish is due to make a splash on our menus in 2014.

The majority of trends have a way of coming full circle and retail pop-up shops are no different.  Ten years ago they were wholly considered a passing trend, a fad that would not take on. Yet nearly a decade later they’re still going strong. With trendy one-item restaurants set to join in on the action in 2014, we can look forward to a whole host of wacky culinary creations to delight our taste buds on the high street. But watch out – they won’t be in the same place for long!

As well as the ones above, some more great trends to watch out for across the pond in 2014 include:

  • Department stores are set to jump back into the restaurant biz with more in-store restaurants set to enhance the customer experience
  • Tasting menus are set to become increasingly popular with more people opting to try multiple courses in order to gain a greater culinary experience
  • Chefs take a new spin on the humble chicken, opening  new upscale chicken-focused restaurants
  • Upmarket food halls are to take over standard shopping centre food courts,  offering “artisan” food sourced from local restaurants instead of the usual big chain brands
  • Restaurants are set to litter our tables with diverse creative spreads – the bread basket as we know it is on a path to greatness
  • Restaurants explore and open new restaurants to show how sensory stimuli can ramp up our dining experience; these range from eating in the dark, listening to opera or even using tactile tableware

What could be more exciting than eating in a pitch black restaurant? I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait for these trends to come and say hello. Well… minus the anchovies, they can either stay across, or in the ‘pond’ as far as my taste buds go!
