With Google naming each android after a sweet treat since 2009, it seems only right for the renowned KitKat to be next in line. Previous Google Android’s have been called Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jellybean (their most recent and obviously our favourite!).
In keeping with the sweet theme and continuing the alphabetical order with the letter ‘K’, this was a huge shock to technology commentators. Google had previously indicated that following Jellybean Android version 4.1 that the next version, 4.4 would be Key Lime Pie. Key Lime Pie does not nearly compare to the recognition and popularity of the world’s biggest food and beverage company, Nestle, which sell KitKat bars and so it seems the perfect opportunity for Google and Nestle to combine their hugely popular brands to release more than 50 million branded KitKat bars to mark the launch of Android KitKat.
The KitKat packs will draw attention to their website, www.android.com/kitkat in which consumers can enter a competition and win prizes including credits to spend in Google Play, Google Nexus 7 tablets and movies (to name a few). As well as these prizes, Google and Nestle are also creating a small number of KitKats shaped like an Android robot which can also be won.
