I was struggling to think of something different to do for my birthday this year, so when one of New Yorks most celebrated chefs offered to cook for my party at home how could I refuse! Jehangir Mehta is chef and owner of Graffiti, Mehtaphor, and soon to open Graffiti Me. He was the runner-up on Food Networks’ The Next Iron Chef 2010, and a finalist on Next Iron Chef Redemption 2012 as well as the author of the fabulous cookbook ‘Mantra’.
All of Jehangir’s restaurants offer gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options. Watching him prepare the food and seeing the unusual combination of ingredients inspired me to rethink my usual weekly menu! I was diagnosed with coeliac disease last year so had much to learn from his style of cooking.
There were 7 delicious courses starting with bite sized baked, spicy courgette with fresh steak tomatoes, followed by chestnut mushrooms stuffed with goats cheese. The following dishes included super hot spices with duck and chocolate and unusual flavours in a mushroom and crab gazpacho. For dessert Jehangir created a pudding that was made to look like breakfast “to finish where we started our day”. What was seemingly a piece of toast was a sweet but aromatic sponge and the pot of yogurt a rich chocolate mousse, just delicious!
Hmmm… how to top that for my next birthday?
