Well, we like to think we break the big stories first here on the Jellybean blog. The water cooler moments of tomorrow start here you know.
Well, it appears that we were beaten to it this time (natch) by a previously unheard of Twitterer, who posited this question:
‘Who’s Yum Yum’s are better; @GreggstheBakers or @UKTesco?
Like we said, only the biggest of stories here on the Jellybean blog.
What followed showed not only the power of Social Media to amplify a small comment into a large online debate, but also an example (well mostly) of great humour and personality laid bare by the operators of both Greggs and Tesco’s Twitter accounts.
So what you might say? Well, the media picked up on it no only as an example of two giants of the high street going head-to-head over Yum Yum’s of all things, but also as a great example of two giants taking the time to respond to an individuals quest to answer what on the surface seems like a trivial issue. What went right for them?
Firstly, and vitally, both were doing their research in the social space, enough to detect this message and act upon it.
Secondly they had clearly been briefed well, to engender humour and personality into their posts (See ‘Do you sell whoopass in cans?’, ahem), both crucial traits in any behemoth aiming to create a compelling presence that feels familiar and approachable.
And lastly they entered into the spirit of the occasion, avoiding (well, just) the big brand battles that often clog up Twitter (Alan Sugar and Donald Trump anyone?) and saw the opportunity for banter, well aware that the awareness of both brands and ‘Yum Yum’ would do their sales no harm at all.
