With one of the biggest sporting events around the corner and finally a change in weather, it’s a great chance to get out of the house and make the most of this exciting time. With many of us attending festivals, going on holiday and some lucky people spectating at Olympic events, it’s inevitable we will all be eating out at some point, and according to a recent survey, where we choose to eat needs as much thought as planning our days out.
The survey, carried out for the Food Standards Agency, revealed that about three quarters of people in the UK are willing to take food safety risks when eating out, putting them at an increased risk of food poisoning. This could be slightly worrying with the Olympics expecting to see more Brits and visitors from abroad eating out.
The survey also revealed that of the 2205 people surveyed, 26% of these take food risks whilst on holiday and 15% admitted to overlooking food safety when at sporting at music events.
To avoid food poisoning, the FSA have suggested several steps which include washing hands before eating, looking for a good hygiene rating for the food business and ensuring the premises you are getting your food from is clean. Although the FSA will be carrying out inspections in food businesses, we suggest you check for yourself before choosing where to eat so that you can have a hassle free summer and enjoy all the events you may be attending!
