With a wide range of heavyweight speakers the day touched on issues including: top line marketing strategy, the ever controversial TripAdvisor and alike with a look at the impact of review sites, OTA’s (Online Travel Agents), insight into how consumers are researching and purchasing online from Google, improving customer experience as an operator, deals and daily deal websites, such as LivingSocial, social media and the opportunities there-in and local marketing around sustainability issues. With case studies and expert speakers, as well as panel discussions across a broad range of topics, the day proved to be very informative. One very interesting point for us anyway was that it would seem that the majority of operators are playing catch-up when it comes to responsive website design to ensure sites display properly on mobile and tablet devices.
This is an area Jellybean is pioneering for our clients as the statistics show that things are changing dramatically from what was once a desktop media to a mobile based one. Erica Trittschuh from Google shared some very interesting stats, some of which I have already Tweeted, but certainly bear repeating. There is currently 41% penetration of smart phones in the UK with 51% of 3G penetration. 19% of all queries made through Google in the UK regard travel. Over 60% of us research online and purchase online when it comes to travel. While on smart phone Google queries around travel account for 29% and 36% involve restaurants, pubs and bars! Indeed, 70% of mobile hotel bookings are for same day check-in, so those without mobile friendly sites may be missing out on last minute bookings.
Indeed, 61% of smart phone users will not return to a site on their phone if it is not mobile friendly and 40% will then go direct to a competitor! Plus, where sites do get it right and have a mobile friendly site there is an 85% increase in consumer engagement with the brand! With a 91% increase in year on year revenue from mobile bookings as experienced by Intercontinental Hotel Group you may be right to be worried.
