This week highlights the celebration of two well loved foods – doughnuts and sandwiches!
Doughnuts may not be the healthiest of snacks but by eating these tasty treats this week (8th – 15th) you could be contributing to a very good cause. Participating bakers all over the UK are selling doughnuts to raise money and awareness for The Children’s Trust, a charity for children with multiple disabilities. So there is no need to feel guilty about a small doughnut indulgence when the proceeds go to such a worthy cause! This week is also British Sandwich Week, which runs from the 9th to the 15th May and aims to celebrate the institution that is the sandwich. According to the BSA (British Sandwich Association) we eat over 11.5 billion sandwiches a year, 3 billion of which are produced by the
foodservice industry. The first pre-packaged sandwich was sold by Marks and Spencer in 1980. Today, Britain’s biggest sandwich retailer is the US chain Subway, which overtook Tesco, Greggs and Marks & Spencer in 2006. Having evolved from ham or cheese on square white bread that was the staple of children’s packed lunches, the sandwich has grown into, for some, an art form. Any filling goes nowadays!
