If you are anything like the rest of us in the Jellybean office then you may have indulged in the odd chocolate egg (or three) over the long weekend and are now feeling the pangs of post-Easter guilt. However, you may now demolish the rest of your Easter treats guilt free as it was reported in the news last week that chocolate is in fact good for the heart. According to the Daily Telegraph (31.03.2010), “cocoa beans contain flavonols, which are thought to increase nitric oxide in the blood and improve the function of blood vessels”. So there you have it, you are officially allowed to eat chocolate everyday.
However, as the saying goes, too much of a good thing is bad for you. Sadly none of the many studies into the health benefits of cocoa products justify eating more than one bar of chocolate a day. Brian Buijusse, who co-authored the report, said, “Small amounts of chocolate may help to prevent heart disease, but only if it replaces other energy dense food – such as snacks – in order to keep body weight stable.”
So although the report is good news for chocoholics I don’t think we will be seeing any Government campaigns for getting your five chocolate bars a day any time soon.
