Eventually got in at 20 past midnight. I made it, tired and very hungry – thank goodness I took two nutrigrain bars from the kitchen and a bag of jellybeans!
In my eight and a bit hours of travel I saw one gritter. What is it with this country and their complete inability to function with a bit of snow?
I made it past Heathrow without much trouble, it was when I tried to get off the M40 at Beaconsfield… complete gridlock. In the next hour I inched my way round the roundabout and headed back down to the M25 to head round to the A41. Was starting to run low on fuel, got to Watford, fuelled up and headed north up the a41. It wasn’t closed but again gridlock. the next five miles took 2 hours, I decided not to try for the big hill outside Berkhamstead so came off at Hemel and the road down to the main town was a sheet of ice, it was carnage, it was gridlock, no one going anywhere. 9pm… we started inching, 10 m every 10 minutes. I don’t think I got out of first gear for the next hour… got into Berkhamstead High street and saw a gritter… sadly he hadn’t done the road to Tring. Another hill – another standstill another Luckily I knew a little side road round and went for it with several others leading the way. Liberation! I was free and gingerly made my way up the snowy country lanes until I finally pulled in home at 20 past midnight…
Suffice to say I won’t be coming in today, I’m working from home!
