Just back from an Arctic adventure – a hectic five days in Lapland,Northern Sweden.
Flying in to Lulea, we could hardly see a thing the cloud was so low,but what an adventure it turned into. We saw Reindeer, we ate Reindeer both dried and stewed, we were invited into a typical Swedish home and shared great hospitality. We drank Aquavit – their Swedish home distilled liquor- powerful or what! We skied – the first time in October at a cute family run resort at Kabdalis, great snow and blue skies. We went into the Arctic Circle and saw an excellent exhibition on the Sami people of Lapland.
We think we saw the northern lights through the clouds, but not in all their glory! We hardly saw a car in all the time we were there. We drove at 60mph on ice packed roads – winter tyres are great! (No wonder all
the good rally drivers come from this part of the world!) I now know where all the wood for the paper we use every day comes from – a precious resource – we must recycle more!. They seem to have a far better work/life balance than we do… Something for everyone to work on maybe. They are just entering their slow time – where the dark (20 hours a day) envelopes everything for the next 6 months of the year.
I would thoroughly recommend a visit. I can’t wait to go back just so I can finally say – yes I’ve seen the northern lights!
